{"id":473,"date":"2008-12-05T22:15:22","date_gmt":"2008-12-06T03:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.davehitt.com\/blog2\/internet-video-but-first-a-word-from-our-sponsor\/"},"modified":"2008-12-05T22:19:13","modified_gmt":"2008-12-06T03:19:13","slug":"internet-video-but-first-a-word-from-our-sponsor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.davehitt.com\/blog2\/internet-video-but-first-a-word-from-our-sponsor\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet Video &#8211; But First, a Word From Our Sponsor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I visited the Discover site to see the outakes and extras for Mythbusters.\u00c2\u00a0 Most were only a few minutes long, but every one started with a 30 second commercial that couldn&#8217;t be bypassed.\u00c2\u00a0 I watched a couple of clips, and left, never to return.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m seeing this more and more on video sites.\u00c2\u00a0 First it was pop-up ads.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re annoying, but there&#8217;s usually a little X that lets you turn them off.\u00c2\u00a0 But now sites are insisting we watch commercials before they bless us with their video.\u00c2\u00a0 Screw that.<\/p>\n<p>The one place I will put up with commercials is Hulu.com.\u00c2\u00a0 They play entire episodes of shows, and add one commercial where the show originally had commercial breaks.\u00c2\u00a0 (They also have entire movies, but I haven&#8217;t watched any, so don&#8217;t know how they do commercials on them.) Most are thirty seconds long and some are only ten or fifteen.\u00c2\u00a0 Occasionally they&#8217;ll offer the option of watching one sixty second commercial at the start of the show and then present the rest of it commercial free, which is pretty cool.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s worth it to watch Babylon 5 or Arrested Development.<\/p>\n<p>But for every place else, forget it.\u00c2\u00a0 The internet is about choice, not force, and if you think you can force me to watch an annoying commercial before I can watch your short clip, you&#8217;re wrong.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m outta there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I visited the Discover site to see the outakes and extras for Mythbusters.\u00c2\u00a0 Most were only a few minutes long, but every one started with a 30 second commercial that couldn&#8217;t be bypassed.\u00c2\u00a0 I watched a couple of clips, and left, never to return.
